JD I agree with the rest and leave my topping lift on the boom. Just make sure that it is long enough that it doesn't interfere with the mainsheet when pulling the boom down. That should be obvious but that was something I did back when. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't flatten the sail until I realized that the topping lift was holding the boom up.
