In the 18 years we owned Fretless we raised and lowered the mast twice a
year, once at the beginning and once at the end of the season, sometimes
and additional time in the side yard in the springtime plus a few other
times for repairs, hauling the boat for storms and the like. It was
enough so we sort of knew what we were doing but we always followed the
step by step instructions carefully.

A couple of bits of advice.

We always found it helpful to continually ask ourselves "what is holding
the mast up?" as we moved on to the next step.

And make sure the cabin top sliding hatch is in the closed position. If
it is not, the forward edge will act as a fulcrum for a very large lever
fully capable of prying the mast-step up. This is the voice of
experience. Fortunately it's an easy fix.

Best of luck with your repairs.
