At least the boat wasn?t on the trailer. I?d guess I?ve towed my various Rhodes well over 10K miles all on a single axel. Easy to manually push around on flat driveway or pad. Never had a flat. How does your trailer compare to the triad? All. Thanks for the thoughts. I?m very glad I didn?t lose /Lark/. My Explorer also looks unscathed. Hopefully there?s no hidden damage to the factory hitch. I?m close to GVWR with boat, passenger, food and baggage. Tow capacity is also close to boat, anchors, motor, fuel and trailer weight. I?m not sure I want the weight of an extra axle with my current tow vehicle. On the other hand, perfect boat balance is essential. Loss of a tire at speed could be ugly and top speed is limited to 63 mph depending on boat placement and semi turbulence. Barring accident, the replacement trailer will far outlast my tow vehicle. I was curious if anybody has towed both trailer versions with the same vehicle to compare how the rig behaves. I also have a small power boat on a double axle trailer that I have to turn 90 degrees to get it in and out of my garage seasonally withOUT a tow vehicle because I don't have enough room for that (so we use an electric trailer dolly) and it is a pain - it does not want to turn. However, I do not typically trailer either one any substantial distance, so I can not comment on that aspect of it. Glad you weren?t hurt. I live in GA and trailer my boat all over from lake Winnebago in WI to the FL keys. I have a single axle Triad. And while I really like Triad trailers, I really wish mine was a tandem axle. If you?re just using it to launch and recover once a season, then the single axle makes sense. But over the road for any distance or frequency, tandem is the way to go. They?re just more stable. Wear and tear is spread out over all four tires so they tend to last longer especially if you can keep them out of the sun. I got a single axle trailer when I bought Country Rhodes. It was probably came with the boat. I'm sure the trailers made now are a lot better than that 86 , but I was a whole lot happier with the 2004 double axel. The single axle had to have the boat all the way forward and didn't like to go faster than 60 mph. Even at sixty, a big bump could have the tail wagging the dog in a hurry. With the boat six Inches back, you can reduce that to 55 mph. I've been following your adventures, and if you plan to keep on trailer-sailing like you have been, a double axel will serve you well. I can cruise at 70 mph, with the boat six inches back of the sweet spot, with the duel axel trailer. That is being pulled with the same vehicle, a 2002 Toyota 4Runner sport, with a V-8. The boat was a little more forward on the trailer than it had been for the previous 3 haul-outs; the bow was in contact with the stopper. On the previous haul-outs, the bow was about 3" short of the stopper. This additional weight forward combined with severe rust on the interior of the extension and the change in incline of the ramp seem to have combined to cause the failure. The extension that came with my used trailer is 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 1/8" thick steel. The coupler is marked "Class 2". Does this seem right? It would seem to me that Class 3 would be more appropriate for the Rhodes, no? So I need to replace this extension and coupler. I'm thinking that I'm going to upgrade to 3/16" thick steel. But I can't seem to locate a suitable class 3 coupler. It seems the class 3 couplers require a 3" extension bar (rather than the 2 1/2" extension that fits the trailer). I'm interested to hear what the community thinks about this. X 2-1/2? X 3/16? thick square cold rolled C-steel tubing. I have a short stub of 3? X 3? X 3/16? thick square tubing welded onto the end to provide a mounting point for the trailer coupling. The 3? square tubing with a 3/16? wall thickness will slip fit over the 2-1/2? square tubing. You will be able to do a very strong overlapping weld joint. I built mine like this in 1989 and have dozens of launch and retrievals on the system with zero issues. Oh yes, many of our members are available at all hours and may even extend an invitation to sail with them or offer to drop by and help you. I've recently discovered the Rhodes 22 and am very interested in finding one for sale. I'm located in Fort Worth, Texas but willing to look at any location for the right fit/price. Side note, I discovered the R22 a couple of weeks ago while looking around the marina at Eagle Mountain Lake in Fort Worth and saw one on sitting at the dock. I snapped a photo of it and started my research. Interestingly, I was looking at the R22 Location Map on this site and see that the owner is on this list, She's a buauty! Great to know there are a few R22's around here! I noticed several on the map in Texas. Did you buy yours out of state and ship it down or drive it? I found a site where truckers with empty loads on their return trips will bid on your shipment just to have some profit for the return trip. Here in Texas, it's hard to find a good sailboat in this size so shipping it or driving it down is about the only option unless you get lucky and find one around here. Drove up to get and hauled it back. Single axle trailer, no problem. Bought my current boat used from 2nd or 3rd owner. He lived on Horseshoe Bend. Much shorter drive. Richard on this list does delivery from General Boats. I think his charge is reasonable, but I?ve never needed to find out firsthand.
