I also have the Raymarine ST1000.  I depend on it heavily, though I don’t consider it to be all that dependable, so I actually have two of them.

My installation is very similar to Bill’s.  He said that he found the the fiberglass at the mounting point was quite thick.  On my boat I found it to be quite thin, so I backed it up with a 3/4” wooden block epoxied in place underneath.
