Hi Chris,
You will need to put the sails on the ground in order to add the telltales. Remove the jib while the mast is still up. Do 2 sets of 3. The first set 12 to 18" from the luff, the second 3' or so to use when the jib is partially furled.
Adding 4 to the leach is nice, but you would have to remove the sail from the mast when on land. Peter Nyberg has a video on that. The main does not need telltales on the luff.
